The people behind the instrument.
Perception Instruments LLC exists to turn subjective sensory language -- smooth, sticky, stringy, hard to squeeze, easy to spread -- into repeatable mechanical measurements that CPG R&D teams can use in formulation decisions.
Andrei Potanin
Retired Senior Director at Colgate-Palmolive with extensive experience in consumer product sensory science. Published researcher in rheology and tribology and developer of emulative testing methodologies described in the peer-reviewed literature.
Dmitry Komkov
Designer and builder of custom emulative testing instruments. Specializes in mechatronic systems that replicate human touch with sensor-equipped, finger-like probes.
The research lives at Perceptometry Lab.
Our methods are validated in peer-reviewed journals -- statistical relationships between instrument measurements and human sensory scores, across oral care, personal care, household, and food categories. Perceptometry Lab documents the papers, the methods, and the instruments in use.
See the instrument in person.
In October 2026 at SOR 2026 in Boston, Andrei Potanin is speaking on emulative sensory measurement while Dmitry Komkov demonstrates the instrument live in the booth. It is the fastest way to see how an emulative measurement maps to what your consumers feel.
